Carrying torches reminiscent of a Sicilian tradition, the Sant'Alfio members converge at Common and Newbury Street accompanied by three marching bands.

Forming a large circle, the members give praise to the Three Saints with the traditional cheer (Con Vera Fede! VIVA SANT' ALFIO!) as the St. Alfio Band plays the Cantata, a traditional three-part hymn in honor of the Brothers. (Click on link to listen.)

Devils Tower rises 1267 feet above the Belle Fourche River in Wyoming. Purchase print here.

Also known as Bears Lodge, it is a sacred site for many American Indians.

President Theodore Roosevelt proclaimed Devils Tower the first national monument in 1906. It is a very popular rock climbing site.

This 1347 acre park is covered with pine forests, woodlands, and grasslands.

As one drives west across Rte 90 in South Dakota there is no avoiding the numerous billboards directing drivers to

Wall's Pharmacy.

It's quite the tourist stop, colorful and loads of western wear and souvenirs and places to eat and relax.

(My review of Wall's: the people who work there seem tourist weary. The cowboy boots & clothing were overpriced and the homemade donuts looked very heavy. We didn't buy anything or eat there because there was no hospitality to speak of.)

Mt Rushmore! At the visitor center, one can read the history of the planning and the stories of the workers who scaled the mountain every day to complete the sculpture.

On The Road: Cleveland to Chicago

From Niagara Falls we drove to Cleveland to get my souvenirs, a Cleveland Indians t-shirt and a couple of caps.

We stopped in Ann Arbor, Michigan to have dinner at Zingerman's Roadhouse while waiting for the tow truck to come and assist us with a flat tire. The people in Ann Arbor are so friendly, it's like being guests at the Emerald City.

Stopped in Chicago just long enough to have some lunch and snap a few shots of Wrigley Field, Home of the Chicago Cubs.

On The Road: Niagara Falls

On October 3rd, 2010, John and I set out on our first cross country trip together. It was kicked off by the Jack Kerouac Literary Festival held in Lowell Massachusetts. We left from Lowell and arrived at our first destination, Niagara Falls at 9:30 PM. The falls at night are especially breathtaking, and we had the view right over Horseshoe Falls on the New York side all to ourselves. We didn't have to pay for parking at that time of night either!

Some Italian immigrants celebrated Mass in the basement chapel of the largely Irish St. Laurence O’Toole Church, at the intersection of East Haverhill Street and Newbury Street, until they had collected sufficient funds to erect the Holy Rosary Church in 1909 nearby at the intersection of Union Street and Essex Street.^[10] Immigrants from Lentini (a city in the Sicilian province of Syracuse) and from the Sicilian province of Catania maintained a particular devotion to three Catholic martyrs, Saint Alfio, Saint Filadelfo and Saint Cirino, and in 1923 began celebrating a procession on their feast day.^[14] Although most of the participants live in neighboring towns, the Feast of Three Saints festival continues in Lawrence today. Many of the Italians who lived in the Newbury Street area had immigrated from Mistretta, Italy.

My latest painting as part of my On the Road series is The Tractor, 16x20", Oil on Linen Board. The Tractor represents the time Jack Kerouac spent in a migrant workers' camp in California. In the time it took to paint this tractor, I've come to recognize the tractor as a symbol of mechanized labor and the land, and it's quite powerful.

Doing spring cleaning in my studio, I came across my journal from a trip to Italy in 2005.

Entry 9/24
"Today we visited Monte San Savino in the morning. another Renaissance town with the Medici Crest everywhere. We were in the square admiring fresco remains on a church when a wonderful gentleman Giuliano, approached us and opened The Church of Santa Chiara for us. What an amazing place. Tiny! He tried to explain the relief of San Lorenzo, San Sebastiano and San Rocco... I think he was trying to explain another spiritual triad. He showed us the body of San Teodor and other relics of saints."

Here is my latest portrait of Jack Kerouac. The Birthday Celebration in Lowell was an honor to be a part of. Meeting Jack's friend David Amram was a thrill, and hosting the poetry reading with him playing background jazz was an esoteric experience hidden away from the general population, although it was advertised and we had a full house. We participated in something so unusual and extraordinary, it was such a pleasure. I was inspired to paint other poets as well as scenes I have photographed on numerous road trips across the USA. After reading The Sunflower Sutra by Allen Ginsberg, I decided to paint Caboose from a photo I had taken in Santa Fe, New Mexico. This is the fourth and final train in my "On the Road" series until I can get to another train yard.

The giclee prints were made at Image-Tec in Methuen, Massachusetts. The painting was scanned and a limited number of prints were made. My black and white paintings are composed in Ivory Black, Titanium White and Payne's Gray.
Here, the train as a powerful monolith is about to be derailed and immobilized, presumably replaced by something sleeker and faster.

Rain on Brick

Spent the afternoon at the Western Avenue Studios in Lowell, Massachusetts. There is a lot of talent spread out on five floors and it was a pleasure meeting and talking with so many of them.

We also walked along the canal as the first wet snowflakes of the season began to fall.

It was a perfect Saturday in the rain, tasting glugg, and chatting with photographers, painters, beaders and sculptors.

We also visited Tutto Bene for their wine tasting event, and their cheese case was just incredible!

She dropped me off at Dharma Buns Sandwich Co. and I had a late lunch with John before heading home.

Lowell, Massachusetts, City of Lights

The City of Lights parade in Lowell was a very festive event. We chose to watch it close to the starting point, on Central Street, near Jackson Street. We watched the marching bands line up, and saw cheerleaders practicing before the official start time. It was a perfect night for the parade, clear and not too cold.

I loved being at the parade at night, it was the usual parade with floats and marching bands, but lit up like a Christmas tree!

Dharma Buns had a very cool holiday design painted by Haley Vick. Santa's motorcycle generated a Lost like smoke monster which delivered the prized keg of Chimay to the polar bears who are enjoying the Belgian brew.

My latest portrait is Carlos de Jesus, a professor my son Alex had at Tisch. Carlos escorted Alex and classmates to Cuba for two spring semesters abroad. During the second visit, Alex filmed Carlos talking about life in Greenwich Village during the 50s and 60s, and his experiences made him the perfect candidate to be included in my "On the Road" series of black and white oil paintings.

Dharma Buns Sandwich Co. is open for business and operating in the historic city of Lowell Massachusetts! The brain child of my husband John and our son Alex, it is a hip new gourmet sandwich restaurant that pays homage to the writers of the Beat generation. They make great sandwiches and offer a wide spectrum of imported ales and stouts as well as wine, juices, energy drinks and delicious milk shakes.

Dharma Buns is an inviting dining destination day or night. There is a retail area featuring Dharma Buns t-shirts, magazines and currently a book by local poet Mary McManus.

My On the Road series is officially hung at Dharma Buns Sandwich Co in preparation for the grand opening on Thursday, October 15th. In addition to the Beat poets already posted, I've begun portraits of trains. Here are my Caboose and Santa Fe Southern, both painted from photographs I took while in Santa Fe last year.

The Corn Maze

Took a break from painting today and visited The Kimball Farm Corn Maze, which is pretty much right in my own back yard! It was nice to experience the gorgeous colors of the farm as I am continuing to work in black and white oil in the studio. The maze was a challenge, and it was surprising to find buffalo roaming the farm. Be sure to click on the photos for enlargements.

As summer is ending, the Feast of the Three Saints is quickly approaching and the painting series is shaping up. The latest poets I've added are poet priestess of punk who is still rockin', Patti Smith and survivor Jim Carroll, author of The Basketball Diaries. I've seen each perform on several occasions and I think they are direct descendants of the Beat poets lineage. I mention The Feast of the Three Saints because it is a major event in our home and with John being co-chairman this year, all of our spare time is spent in preparation of the upcoming weekend. John and Alex are working constantly getting ready to open DharmaBuns Sandwich Co, Lowell, MA. They have created gallery space for me there and have requested a series of black & white oil paintings of a variety of poets and writers. Here are Beat writers Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs along with Hunter S. Thompson. I am continuing the series with poet/musicians as well as scenes of the famous Route 66. All paintings are on 16x20" canvas board.
